Polar Activity Monitor Project

Thank you very much for choosing to participate in this project. The information gathered from this project will help participating students develop a deeper insight into their current activity levels (and plan for the next semester without Phys. Ed) as well as complete information for their DPA requirements. This information will also be of great value to the Physical Education department in gaining a deeper understanding about the physical activity trends among our grade 10 student body and how we can modify our program to best meet the needs and interests of them.

Project Description:

This project involves a select group of grade 10 students who are currently enrolled in a Physical Education 10 class and will measure the amount of daily physical activity time they achieve throughout a full week (7 days). In utilizing the Polar Activity Monitors this information will be recorded in the watches and no extra measures are needed for completion. There are 2 stages to the project as described below.

Stage 1

  • Student will take an information letter home to parent(s)/guardian(s) describing the project and return it signed giving consent for them to participate in the project
  • Student will return the signed letter to Mr. Ogilvie and then sign out one of the Polar Activity Monitors and collect their information package and complete a quick question sheet
  • For 1 full week (7 days) the student will wear the watch throughout the day (please not in any water-pool, shower, etc) and nothing extra needs to be done
  • At the end of the 7 days the student will return the watch and sheets to Mr. Ogilvie and stage 1 will be finished

The information from all the watches will be downloaded by Mr. Ogilvie and kept secure until the end of the project. If any student would like to see and discuss their information from stage 1 they are free to speak with Mr. Ogilvie about this.

Stage 2

  • At a future point in semester 2 (when the participating students from stage 1 do not have a Phys. Ed course) Mr. Ogilvie will approach the participating students from stage 1 to repeat the process of wearing the watches for 7 full days
  • Participating students will be asked once again to go about their daily routines as per normal and do anything out of the ordinary just because they are wearing the watches

When then 2nd stage is completed the information will once again be downloaded and compared with the information from stage 1 with each participating student (on an individual basis).

All students will be kept anonymous when discussing information/findings from this project
